About Transmit

A place for a group of friends to talk, share and stream together in good quality, at a fair price.

Why I built this

Most chat platforms are designed, and priced, around enormous communities. That is a poor fit for a small group of friends, who end up paying for features and a pricing structure built for someone else. I wanted to design a product, and price it, around a small group of friends instead.

Who runs it

Transmit is run by Transmit. I am one person, and I am a security engineer by trade. You can reach me at [email protected].

Built to be secure

Security is not an afterthought here; secure by design is the mission. I am making every effort to build it securely, and the service is monitored, including for vulnerabilities. Things that could hurt people, like removing an account or acting on a report, need me to sign them off with my passkey, and everything I do is recorded.

How it is built

I started this project in September 2024 and wrote the first of it myself. Since then I have used AI-assisted coding: OpenAI's Codex and Google's Jules from 2025, and Claude, from Anthropic, more recently. I think you should know that.

The design decisions are mine, and so is the testing, and I fix bugs wherever I find them. AI is only a tool for building Transmit, and no moderation decision is made by AI: a person reads every report and decides what happens.

The code is tested heavily. See how it is tested.

Built to follow the rules

Transmit is not built to dodge the law. It will follow the data protection (GDPR) and child safety laws that apply, using the least invasive and best-sourced ways of checking age that are available, and asking for no more than it needs. If a better, less intrusive way appears, I will move to it.

How it is paid for

It is not built to make a big profit. I am a one-person operation, and the servers cost real money to run. The aim is to charge a much more reasonable amount than the big platforms for the same features, because it is built for smaller groups. Anything that costs more to run, such as the bandwidth for higher-quality streams and storage for attachments, is where charges will come from. There are no adverts, and your data is never sold.

Transmit wouldn't exist without open-source software, written and maintained by people who share their work freely. I am grateful for it. When I find a bug or a way to improve one of those projects, I will send the fix back to them. If Transmit ever makes a profit, I also intend to give a share of it back to the projects it relies on.
